Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is elected by members every two years at the General Assembly. The President, President-elect, Treasurer and eight additional board members volunteer their time and expertise to strengthen the organization and its role as the international voice for industrial design.

The men and women of the Board have always been at the heart of the organization, giving it purpose and direction. We thank all those who have served on past Boards.

Mugendi M’Rithaa
President

Get to know Mugendi

Prof. Mugendi K. M’Rithaa is an industrial designer, educator and researcher at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. He studied in Kenya, the USA, India and South Africa and holds postgraduate qualifications in Industrial Design and Higher Education, as well as a doctorate in Universal Design. He is widely traveled and has taught in Kenya, Botswana, South Africa and Sweden and is passionate about various expressions of socially conscious (and responsible) design, including: Designerly Strategies for Mitigating Climate Change; Design for Social Innovation and Sustainability; Distributed Renewable Energy; Indigenous Knowledge Systems; Participatory Design; and Universal Design.

Mugendi has a special interest in the pivotal role of design thinking in advancing the developmental agenda primarily on the African continent. He is associated with a number of international networks focusing on design within industrially developing (or majority world) contexts. Mugendi is also Africa’s first President of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid), to be known as the World Design Organization (WDO) on 1 January 2017. Much of his work focuses on the importance of WDO in supporting the aspirations of younger designers worldwide.

Vivian Cheng

With 20 years’ experience in industrial design and design education, Vivian founded “Vivian Design” in 2014 to provide consultancy services in design networking, and event management while promoting her own jewellery and glass art. A graduate of Hong Kong Polytechnic University with a Bachelor and a Master of Design, she has received several prizes for her work in product design.

Vivian has been a member of numerous professional organizations, sat on assessment panels for the government and NGOs in Hong Kong. and been on international design competition juries for the Red Dot Design Award, the ADI Compasso D’Oro International Award in Italy, the Braun Prize, and the Gold Pin award in Taipei among others.

Eunjoo Maing

Eunjoo has been at Korea Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP) since 1995 where she has led a variety of teams and divisions and acquired a range of experience and expertise. Achievements include the first national Design Census; Korea’s national initiative for recognition of young talents; ‘Stanford-KIDP Design & Innovation Management programme; establishment of a master plan for multi-disciplinary design education in Korean universities; ‘Design Sharing’ with ASEAN member countries; and curating Korean design pavilions for international exhibitions.

Eunjoo is currently director of the Global Business & Cooperation Division. In this role she collaborates with organizations worldwide to support Korean design business trade and to organize exhibitions or seminars that promote Korean design abroad or introduce foreign design to Korea.

Luisa Bocchietto
President-elect

Luisa works as a designer and architect in both the public and private sector, carrying out projects aimed at local development, urban reclamation, and renovation. Her projects and products are published on various specialized magazines. She has contributed texts on architecture and design for various publications, has organized exhibitions (Pop Design, D come Design) as well as attended conferences and served on international juries. Luisa also cooperates as visiting professor with universities and design schools.

As a past president, Luisa serves on the governing council of the Associazione per il Disegno Industriale (ADI). She is also a past president of the Association of Architects in Biella and was a member of the organizing committee for World Design Capital 2008 Torino.

Alpay Er
Board Member

Alpay is Industrial Design Department Chair at Ozyegin University (OzU) in Istanbul, Turkey. After studying industrial design at Middle East Technical University (METU), he completed his PhD at Manchester Metropolitan University in the UK. Previously he worked at Hacettepe University and Istanbul Technical University (ITU) where he also served as Chair of the Industrial Design Department from 2006 until 2013. A member of the Design Research Society (DRS), Alpay was also conferred with “Fellowship of DRS” in 2006.

His areas of expertise include design management and strategy, design policy, history, and education in emerging economies. His work has appeared in journals such as Design Issues, Journal of Design History, and Asian Design Journal.

Gilles Rougon

Gilles is Interdisciplinary Design Manager for Électricité de France (EDF) R&D. He is in charge of defining, developing, and leading design processes that add value to research and corporate projects focusing on energy issues. He joined EDF in 1999 with a mandate to introduce industrial design to R&D leadership. In 2008 EDF was recognized with a Design Management Europe award for their sustainable design approach.

Gilles is a founding member of the “designcode” collective of design managers and a board member of both l’Agence pour la promotion de la creation industrielle (APCI) and l’École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs (ENSAD) in addition to his activities as lecturer, teacher, writer, and consultant.

Srini Srinivasan
Treasurer

Srini has more than 25 years of professional experience in creative design; user experience design; telecom and wireless product design and development; company formation and venture capital raising; global marketing and sales management; manufacturing and operations. He is a member of various professional bodies, namely WiMAX, WDC2014, Innovations Judge, CES 2012, Usability Panel Member, IEEE, CES 2013.

Currently Srini is the President and CEO of LUMIUM, Inc., a creative design company that designs and delivers complete solutions in consumer electronics, smart devices, medical devices, housewares, and UE design for global clients. He has established business partnerships in many parts of the world using his extensive global network of contacts.

Mario Gagnon

Mario is Co-President of ALTO Design Inc., which he founded in 1986 after having worked for government agencies and manufacturing companies,. Benefitting from the expansion of plastics processes in Quebec, he quickly gained a reputation within the industry and developped broad expertise allowing him to garner national and international awards including Red Dot, IDSA, Hall of Fame 2008/major world player in industrial design.

He was named Associate Professor at Université de Montréal’s Design School in 2016 and has been a guest lecturer at the university’s business school.

Mario is an active member of the Association des designers industriels du Québec (ADIQ) where he is a past president and currently contributing to organizing the World Design Summit Montreal in 2017.

Makoto Watanabe

Makoto is Professor of Design Management at Japan’s Chiba University, Graduate School of Engineering. He has been Programme Manager for the Service and Product Design Programme as well as Project Leader for the Global Asia Design School Programme at Chiba University since 2007. In 2011, the university named him Vice President of the International Strategy Unit. He has also been a guest professor at Zhejiang University since 2009. His areas of expertise and publication are Industrial Design, Design Management, and Design Expert System.

Before going into the academic sector, Makoto was a designer at Seiko. He is a member of the Japan Society for the Science of Design and holds a Doctor of Engineering from Chiba University.

Shikuan Chen

Shikuan leads a team of more than 200 computing and communication/mobile devices design experts at Compal Electronics, where he is responsible for business and design strategies for the global computing and mobile devices business. Since joining the company, Compal’s iF DESIGN AWARD Creativity Ranking went from below the 200th position in 2008 to 18th in 2015.

Shikuan serves on design competition juries internationally and teaches part-time at the Taipei Shih-Chien and Asia Universities. His speeches, seminars, and articles have been widely published in Taiwan and China.

Shikuan currently serves as a consultant for governmental organizations in Taiwan, including the Taiwan Design Center, and the Taipei City Government in an International Advisory Committee capacity for World Design Capital 2016 programming.

Yongqi Lou

Yongqi is Professor and Dean of the College of Design and Innovation at Tongji University, Visiting Professor at Aalto University and Politecnico di Milano. He is Vice President of both CUMULUS and the China Industrial Design Association.
A highly sought-after guest speaker, he also serves on the advisory boards of numerous organizations including the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the DESIS Network, and the journal Design Issues published by The MIT Press.

Yongqi has been a consultant to industry leaders such as Haier, Volvo, Philips, Nokia, Plantagon, and more. His design and research projects have been exhibited in the Design Museum of Helsinki, the Triennale Design Museum in Milano, the Saint-Etienne Biennale in France, to name just a few.
