Created in 1969, the industrial design program has since formed close to a thousand alumni which have contributed significantly in the strengthening and expansion of the Quebec industrial base and economy. Newly created graduate programs in game design and « design and complexity » have enriched and expanded the realm of the design practice for our students. Research conducted at the School in the fields of interaction and experience design, design for society and eco-design, are amongst the most advanced today.

Mission statement: To develop an approach to design research and education characterized by a dynamic integration of theory and practice and encompassing the diverse disciplinary fields that comprise the design project. The school aspires to play a leadership role in project based research in design while keeping it’s strong ties to the Quebec economy and culture.

Long-term goals: The development of research and of graduate studies in design will be the main vectors of growth in the next 3 to 5 years. This will foster an intensification of the school’s international presence through student and professor exchanges, internship programs and through collaborative research and education projects. Concurrently, our Design and Complexity master will likely expand into an international Ph.D program, and the professional graduate program in game design will eventually develop into a full master in interactive experience design. Finally, ecodesign is fast becoming a dominant field of applied research and study at the School and will likely translate into a graduate program of its own.
