WORLD INDUSTRIAL DESIGN DAY 2008
International
World Industrial Design Day 2008 was the first international observance created uniquely to provide an occasion to highlight the merits of the profession and its impact on the quality of life.
Marked by Icsid's anniversary on June 29, World Industrial Design Day (WIDD) is a day to actively engage design professionals and design enthusiasts to explore their creativity, innovation, vision and passion in recognition of the role of industrial design and designers in our society.
The following events represent just some of the fantastic activities that took place around the world on June 29, 2008 in celebration of World Industrial Design Day.
June 30, 2008
On June 30, in Brisbane, Australia, representatives from the Queensland design industry gathered to officially observe the innaugural World Industrial Design Day over a gourmet lunch at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre. The organisations represented included the Australian Graphic Design Association, the Australian Institute of Architects, the Design Institute of Australia, Queensland Government and Brisbane Marketing.
Brisbane is the sub-tropical and vibrant capital of the state of Queensland, Australia's fastest growing state. Queensland creative industries comprises a broad range of industries including design. The Queensland government is committed to the vision for "Queensland to be a culturally dynamic place to live, to be rich in diversity and experiences... and where the economy is enhanced by excellence in creative innovation."

Hosted by Tupperware Corporation (USA) in conjunction with Icsid, the WIDD Designer Roundtable was an exclusive culinary gathering of 15 members of the international industrial design community and distinguished representatives of the Montréal business community. Attended by Icsid President Carlos Hinrichsen, Icsid Senator Luigi Ferrara and Secretary General Dilki de Silva, the event fused interests, industries and experience in an interactive setting.
The evening was highlighted by the culinary creations of chef Laurent Godbout at Chez L’Épicier, a restaurant located in the heart of Old Montreal. Mr. Godbout welcomed guests into his kitchen - where inspiration for the event's discussion on design began.

Among the guests of the evening's dinner - hosted by DuocUC were representatives from each of Icsid’s four pillars - educational, promotional, professional and the corporate sector. More than twenty people attended, including media, and students from other spheres, such as engineering.
The occasion was highlighted with reflections of Icsid events going as far back as Icsid’s first regional meeting in 2001, and the 2003 Interdesign. A presentation and video was delivered to share information about the development of the World Design Capital project, as well as report on activities currently happening with WDC Torino 2008, and initiatives taking place in preparation for WDC Seoul 2010.
Attendees provided a variety of perspectives and approaches with regards to the challenges and opportunities of regional developments of industrial design, and design in general. In addition, three business executives received recognition for their contribution to the development of design and for their efforts towards integrating our four pillars in Chile during a period of nearly two decades.
Each of them received a copy of the book “Hall of Fame: Design for a Better Quality of Life,” and brief accounts of their personal histories were given:

Organised by sim (selective international management) and sim design this event offered a unique platform for industrial designers and other industry professionals, to create a forum for exchange between industry creatives and to strengthen the ties between those in the industry and the local designers. Events included an informative cruise, speeches, discussions and networking opportunities.

The Finnish Association of Designers Ornamo celebrated WIDD on Suomenlinna Fortress Island, where 40 years ago the seminar for design students by the legendary design thinkers Victor Papanek, Bucky Fuller and Christopher Alexander was held.
During this event, TKO/ORNAMO launched the first-ever book on the history of Finnish Industrial Design, edited by board members Sanna Simola and Marjukka Makela to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the association.
On the occasion of the first ever WIDD, four new honorary members of TKO were announced: Antti Siltavuori, Juhani Salovaara and Tapani Hyvonen have been Icsid board members reinforcing the most valuable international relations in the field of industrial design. Heikki Metsa-Ketela imported the HfG Ulm School heritage in Finland in the late sixties and has had a strong influence on design education ever since.

Visitors to the red dot design museum - housed in the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen were granted free access to three special exhibitions that were presented at that time: "Design on stage - winners red dot award: product design 2008", an exhibition of all products that have won the renowned "red dot" design award, "Bose Design. The Expression of Technology" presenting the work of this year's design team of the year, and the special exhibition "red dot award: design concept winners’ exhibition", a journey into the future of design based on the products that have won in the category red dot award: design concept.

The Hungarian Design Council celebrated World Industrial Design Day at WAMP, a Design Street Fair held in Budapest on that day. Wamp is a monthly event, that is visited by tens of thousands each time.
The Hungarian Design Council distributed attractive bookmarks and issued a highly-republished press release explaining the the event, so as to create interest and spread the word. The aim was to spark enough interest to encourage more spontaneous events for next year.

Professors, graduates and university students from all over Iran participated in the World Industrial Design Day celebration in Tehran, Iran, from 7:30 - 11:00 pm.
Professor Kalani gave a brief summary of the philosophy behind the celebration and presented ICSID’s history. The screening of an English short movie about the establishment of industrial design associations followed.
To close the evening, candles marked with the Icsid logo were lain out to form the term DESIGN. Participants each received a candle as a souvenir.

The Jordanian Design Center JDC of Yarmouk University YU, in Cooperation with USAID Jordan Economic Development Program (SABEQ), Jordan Chamber of Industry and Jordan Enterprise, celebrated World Industrial Design Day at the Grand Hayatt Hotel in Amman.
At the event, JDC introduced four remarkable industrial designers, all graduates of the Department of Design and Applied Arts at Yarmouk University. Three are new graduates who have distinguished themselves through their excellence, and one is now an established business owner and professional in the field. All four displayed great enthusiasm in the organization of this event, and contributed their time and effort to make it a great success. The day provided an interactive platform for designers, businessmen and officials to network and discuss issues related to design and industry.

The Institute of Industrial Design in Warsaw, Poland, invited representatives from different fields, such as technology, lingustics, industry, education, economy and of course design, to discuss the different context of design today over breakfast.
Beata Bochinska, the President of the Institute of Industrial Design, discussed that a leading role for the institute is to be a platform for disigners and industry. Janusz Kaniewski, deisgner, talked about the new emotional approach to designing cars. Elzbieta Opila, Gdyani Design Days Director and Marketing Direcor of the Institute, described Gdynia Design Days, a first international design event of Baltic countries, organized by Gdynia City and the Institute.
As industrial design is a predominant topic in Poland today, the event received a great deal of media coverage.

The conference entitled "Industrial Design - Perspectives" was organised by the Fine Artists Union of Romania and the Society of Professional Designers in Romania to celebrate World Industrial Design Day. Events included educational and informative discussions and presentations on the topic of industrial design, analyses of several current problems within the domain and proposals of projects that aim to bring higher public visibility and awareness of the design process.
The event was sustained by a design exhibition "DESIGN ® 08", which displayed product design projects from diverse areas, such as household appliances, furniture, clothing and accessories, and car and interior design.
The conference, dedicated to industrial design, included presentations which aimed to increase public understanding of the meaning of industrial design, of the social-economical, functional, technical, aesthetical factors that contribute to the aspect and quality of the industrial product and its effects on daily life.

Taiwan Designers' Week is an annual design event organised spontaneously by a group of Taiwan designers and co-organised by the Taiwan Design Center. This year, 2008 Taiwan Designers' Week joined the network of people celebrating the 1st World Industrial Design Day.
Taiwan Designers' Week 08', with the theme 'Design & beyond', invited visitors to experience the multiple facets of Taiwan Design. Held at Xinyi Public Assembly Hall in Taipei, the event included an exhibition, design bazaar, design talks and open studios.

Istanbul Technical University (ITU) hosted the International Design Lectures in conjunction with the World Industrial Design Day on Sunday June 29 - an event organised by the Dept. of Industrial Product Design since 1998. Leading professional and academic figures from industrial design such as Ettore Sottsass, Konstantin Grgic, Ezio Manzini and Richard Buchanan were among the one that appeared in the ITU lecture series. The WIDD event on 29 June 2008 was kindly supported by Nokia and Icon (TR) design magazine.

Free admission to design museums
The design museums at the International Design Center Nagoya (IdcN) and the Japan Industrial Designer's Association (JIDA) were open with free admission on June 29. It is intended to have a free-admission day every year on this day.World Industrial Design Day Celebration
