WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL TORINO 2008

On 30 September 2005, Icsid officially named the city of Torino, Italy, the first World Design Capital in recognition of the crucial role Torino and Piemonte play on an international level. This nomination is welcomed as an important opportunity to design new ways to develop the territory.

In accepting this challenge, the city of Torino is proud to be a “beta-tester” of the World Design Capital project, which is promoted by the International Design Alliance (IDA) and conducted by Icsid. This unprecedented title is thus welcomed as an important opportunity to design new ways to develop the territory.

2008 events

MAIN EVENT: NEW YEAR'S EVE OF DESIGN

Fifteen to twenty communities will interact with designers and companies in order to really create objects, environments and services that meet their own needs, but that also express a capacity to stimulate supply.

MAIN EXHIBITION: OLIVETTI. THE CREATIVE COMPANY
The purpose of the exhibit is to illustrate the complexity of Olivetti’s strategy. Rather than following an analytical path, the exhibit is a comprehensive overview of an extraordinary landscape of modernity.

JUNE 2008 / SEPTEMBER 2008

MAIN EVENT: SUMMER SCHOOL
Designing Connected Places is an international summer design school. But there is much more. It is also a programme for action throughout Piemonte. Using the tools of design, solutions will be outlined for 6 problems expressed by 6 local bodies. These are: health and well-being, food and new food networks, urban mobility, security and quality of life in the city, new production systems, and forms of representation of the region and its communities.

The summer school brings out a new definition of the "local" and a new role of design: a connected local, understood as local in the era of networks and high connectivity, understood as a concept able to promote original development strategies.

A selected group of young designers of different nationalities will be called on to participate. Guided and stimulated by project leaders and visiting professors of great and proven international experience, they will work intensely for a week on themes indicated by the local "clients".

We are looking for young and promising designers interested and motivated in participating. The application period is open from 1 March 2008 to 15 May 2008. All the applications received by the deadline will be assessed by the members of the scientific and operational committees according with the 30 places available for each workshop.

MAIN EXHIBITION: FLEXIBILITY
The exhibit studies the connection between flexibility and design. Design as an operative instrument of the 21st century; flexibility as a key factor in our success as a living species.

FALL 2008

SHAPING THE GLOBAL DESIGN AGENDA
November 6-7, 2008

An international conference on design policy targeted at design promoters, government policy makers, industrialists, academics, educators and designers. The Conference will provide a global platform for the high-level exchange of ideas, insights and best practice from different countries, regions and cities developing, launching and maintaining effective design policies.

INTERNATIONAL DESIGN CASA
Launch Reception - November 5, 2008
The Welcome cocktail reception for Conference delegates and participating countries of the 'International Design Casa'.

Showcase - November 6-13, 2008
Some of the most prestigious international bodies linked to design will temporarily find 'home' in Torino to present their own national design situation through exhibitions and events. They will bring to Torino an original and simultaneous vision of how the cultures of design are expressed in other parts of the world. Exhibitors include Austria, Belgium, Central and Eastern Europe, France, Japan (City of Nagoya), Norway, Singapore, Spain (City of Barcelona), Sweden and The Netherlands (City of Rotterdam).

CARS. DREAMS AND REALITY
Limited to the Italian "dream cars" from 1950 to 2000, the exhibit documents the fine-tuning of car design research: from the "evasion" prototypes of the initial post-war decades to the more recent "concept car" designed to overcome a critical period in the automotive sector.

About the World Design Capital

World Design Capital is a biennial global competition culminating in a year-long celebration of the role of design in improving the social, cultural and economic life of cities.

The title will be conferred on cities that have demonstrated exceptional progress using the varied tools design offers. They must prove that government, industry, educational institutions, designers and, in fact, the very population of the city, are working individually and in concert to realise the full potential of design. We are looking for sustainable and visible results that enhance the experience of the city and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
