Hosted by the Guangdong South-China Institute of Industrial Design, the 2008 Dongguan Cup International Industrial Design Award will bring together industry experts to exploring more efficient solutions to current challenges in the manufacturing industry in order to enhance our quality of life.

Eligibility and Group categories

Open Group
Open to designers as students or individuals with passion for design. Categories for the Open Group include electronic information products, household products, and toy products.

Enterprise Group
Open to enterprises in Dongguan only. All entry projects are required to have been created after April 2006, with supporting documents by the respective manufacturing enterprises. Alternatively, if an individual designer enrolls for this group on behalf of the enterprise, valid supporting document should be submitted by the respective enterprises.

There is not specific product design category for the Enterprise Group.

All entries of enterprise group would be invited to take part in China Red Star Design Award 2008.

Theme

The theme for the 2008 Dongguan Cup International Industrial Design Award is "Innovative Design and Leading Dongguan - Smart, Simple, Surpassing"

Smart - Focuses on innovative products embodying designer's superior ideas and contributing to Dongguan City's advancement toward an innovation-oriented manufacturing city.

Simple - Features ecology design with good and sustainable manufacturing capabilities.

Surpassing - Feasts to the eyes with better user-friendly performances for future lifestyle and helps in stimulating new industries and businesses

Awards

A variety of awards, with a total value of up to 1,000,000 RMB (around US$120,000), including 6 entrants from the Open Group, will be awarded Golden Prize with 50,000RMB (around US$6,000) plus a week-long "Design Travel to Japan and South Korea". Trophies and certificates will also be awarded.

Judging

Preliminary Screening
7-9 jurors will be be present at the preliminary screening session. They will select 250 projects as winning entries from all competent entries and 30 finalists out of such 250 winning entries for the final selection by on-site review and scoring.

Final Screening
30 finalists will be invited to present their entries in Dongguan and give oral presentation on their projects (English is strongly recommended). Jurors will score the model, design drawing, and presentation to choose the Gold, Silver, Bronze, and Merit Awards winners.

Background

As the manufacturing industry is shifting, low-value products are slowly being phased out. Industrial design, which is seen as the best way to commercialise and market quality products, continues to experience extraordinary growth. With over 700 industry representatives from all over China, the Dongguan Cup is dedicated to creating opportunities for business talks among designers, manufacturers and decision makers form the Government and to developing systems to investigate the commercialisation of entered works. Rather than merely a design competition, Dongguan Cup places priority on the commercialisation of entered works and ultimately, through collaboration with other related professions, aims to further enhance the value of life.

History

An annual international event dated back to 2005, Dongguan Cup International Industrial Design Awards was originally designed to promote independent innovation and original design in Dongguan and the Pearl River Delta area. In 2006, it took a further step toward an internationally-based design event, and in 2007, an endorsed event by the Icsid. With four years' hosting experiences, this year's Dongguan Awards will continue its commitment to showcase originality in industry, international standards, ethnic flavor, and Chinese style.
