WORLD DESIGN CAPITAL 2012: ANNOUNCEMENT OF SELECTION
The World Design Capital project aims to promote and encourage the use of design to further the social, economic and cultural development of the world's cities. In this spirit, the designation honours those cities that use design to revitalise and reinvent their urban environment.

Shortlisted cities announced
Icsid has announced on behalf of the members of the WDC Jury that the
City of Eindhoven (The Netherlands) and the City of Helsinki (Finland)
have been selected for the shortlist of cities that will move on to the
next round of evaluation in the hopes of becoming World Design Capital

Eligibility
The World Design Capital designation is open to all interested cities. It is awarded to recognise innovative cities that have most effectively and, more importantly, creatively used design as a tool for progress.
Jury
All entries are reviewed and a short-list of cities is determined by the WDC Jury. The international jury for the 2012 designation will consists of:
- Prof. Carlos Hinrichsen, Icsid President, Director School of Design DuocUC (Chile)
- Deyan Sudjic, Director of the Design Museum (United Kingdom)
- Guto Indio da Costa, Architect (Brazil)
- Se-hoon Oh, Mayor of the City of Seoul (South Korea)
- Brigitte Borja de Mozota, Director of Research, Parsons Paris School of Art & Design (France)
Submission
Interested cities are encouraged to download the application form and guidelines from the official World Design Capital website: www.worlddesigncapital.com

Selection
Applicants will be evaluated based on a predetermined set of criteria and the final selection will be announced at the Icsid World Design Congress in Singapore, in November 2009.
Background
The World Design Capital project is a biennial international designation created to identify and recognise cities that have effectively used design to revive the city and improve its quality of life.
Under the direction of Icsid, the WDC will promote the importance of good design strengthening and empowering cities to use industrial design and graphic design to position their competitive advantages from a social, cultural and economic point of view.
