First "Science & Future" International Concept Car Design Contest: Shortlist announced

Though the financial crisis has affected the entire world and the international auto industry has suffered heavy losses, we still believe that the auto industry will have a bright future. At the same time, we believe only the technology can safeguard the future of auto industry coupled with harmony as a real beauty.

In order to improve the innovation and development of the global car industry, FOTON and the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) will jointly hold the first "Science & Future" International Concept Car Design Contest.

Different from traditional design contest in the past, this contest focuses on self-determined scene design of future lifestyle. The new style of this contest is determined to encourage participants' inspiration and passion, to trigger the independent innovation in car design industry.

Car design agencies, design schools and design professionals from all over the world are invited to join this international festival of car design.

Theme

Design Concept: The design for "Future Lifestyle"

Different from traditional design contest, this contest focuses on predictions of our 'future lifestyle' based on current research data, which features a fruitful 'human-car' relationship. The new style of this contest will encourage participants' inspiration and passion, in order to trigger innovation in car design industry. The contest fuses together the concepts of technology, future and beauty.

The contest contains two rounds: preliminary and final.

Design requirements

  • The type of the vehicles should be passenger car and all designs should use the type of new energy.
  • The design should embody the theme of the contest: "The Sense of Future" and the work should be innovative and creative.
  • The design should proceed from the need of the function of the future lifestyle. The work should meet "the instruction for the concept of future lifestyle."
  • "The instruction for the concept of future lifestyle" requires logicality  clear conception, advanced field of vision, and tight combination between car designing and future life.
  • The connotation of the design should be clear through the work itself.
  • The design should be highly finished, be in accord with major aesthetic taste, and highlight the difference with today's cars.

Contest qualifications

  • Car design agencies, students in design schools, and the amateur designers all over the world are all available to enter.
  • The competitor can be one person or a team (the team member should be less than three.), and the contest won’t distinguish individual or team group.
  • The entry form should be filled online, and the relative materials should be enclosed (including Photocopy of Student ID, normal photos <2 inches>, and candid photos.)
  • The work has to be done by you. Imposture is not allowed. Once investigated, the committee has the right to cancel his qualification for the contest.
  • There is no charge for the entry fee.

Jury

The judge panel includes well-recognised, international car designers, journalists in the car design sector, domestic experts of design institutions and authorities of domestic car design associations.

Wu Xuebin (American)- Chairperson Of the Jury

Chief Designer and President of Automotive Engineering Research Institute of FOTON; Director of Society of Automotive Engineers of China. In 2003, he was appointed as Minister of Vehicle Models Development Department of Automotive Institute and Minister of Trial and Test Department of Chery Motor Co.

Carlos Hinrichsen (Chile)

2007 - 2009 President of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid), and industrial designer, Carlos has been a professor and director at the School of Design of the Instituto Profesional DuocUC of the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile since 1992. Currently he is the Design Director for the Latin American Region of Design Innovation, a European Design company based in Italy with much experience in the automotive sector, among others.

Fabrizio Giugiaro (Italian)

Styling Director of Italdesign - Giugiaro S.p.A. In 1990, he was appointed to the Italdesign-Giugiaro Board of Directors. His list of prototype projects includes the BMW-engined Nazca, the Alfa Romeo Scighera, the Volkswagen Syncro and Roadster, theenty, and the Chevrolet Corvette Moray.

Orazio Fusetti Daldosso ( Italian )

Design and Technical Executive Advisor of Italian TESCO Auto Design Company. In 2000, he was appointed as Chief Designer and Owner of Blu Stile Design Studio. From 2005, he was invited as Visiting Professor of Vehicle Design Centre of China Central Academy of Fine Arts. Since 1997, he has worked as Interior Advisor Designer for Heuliez Group (Italian Department) for 3 years.

Umberto Palermo (Italian)

Chief Designer of IDEA. He has worked for FIAT as an advisor for 13 years in the field of advanced design and style. He was appointed as the Chief Designer in Advanced Design Centre of IDEA in 2000. Since 2004, he has been working for Design Centre of IDEA in Turin and in charge of Brand Rebuilt.

Liu Guanzhong (Chinese)

Professor and Doctor Tutor Art College of Tsinghua University. He was appointed as Chief Designer of System Design Studio of Industrial Design Department of Art College of Tsinghua University and Deputy Chairperson of China Industrial Design Association & Director of Knowledge and Communication Committee of China Industrial Design Association.

Victor Yuan (Chinese)

Chairman of the board and president of Horizon Research Consultancy Group. He was a Juror of "China Red Star Design Award" in 2008. He was appointed as Vice President of China Marketing Research Association、Vice President of Beijing Consulting Association (BCA), Vice President of Harvard Club and ESOMAR Representative and Chairman of China area.

Awards

Twelve grand prize awards and twenty shortlist awards will be given. Besides an intriguing bonus, the grand prize award winners will also have a once-in-a-lifetime experience to show the models of their designs at the 2010 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition.
