Established in 2006, the China Red Star Design Award is an annual social award organised by the Beijing Industrial Design Center (BIDC). It intends to promote Chinese enterprises to protect intellectual property rights, introduce good design into China and internationalise Chinese design. In 2009, the Red Star received 3821 products from 758 applicants, which resulted in 191 products from 102 applicants designated a Red Star Design Award. In 2009, BIDC invited 10 jury members from 6 countries including USA, UK, Japan and Korea and the event held 25 tour exhibitions at the invitation of 16 cities including; Seoul, Shanghai, Shenzhen, and Guang Zhou. In 2010, Red Star will open to international institutes who are registered in China (including Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) for the first time. There will also be an international touring exhibition, as well as further international media collaborations globally.

The Red Star Design Award contributes to the industry of industrial design by honouring good design with various promotions such as; the domestic and international exhibition tour, media reporting and the award ceremony itself. The Red Star Design Award is widely promoted throughout China and continues to propel the development of the design industry through accelerated integration of design and manufacturing, whilst fostering domestic and global collaborations through design.

ELIGIBILITY

Products which are designed or manufactured by enterprises registered in China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan) or those that are batch sold in China (including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan).

The launch time of the product should be from 1 January 2008 - 31 December 2010.

One product must be submitted by one enterprise or designer.

The product which has won a prize in one of the past China Red Star Design Awards is not qualified for entry.

SCREENING CRITERIA

INNOVATION: It stresses on the integration of technology and art, effectively makes use of new technology, material and craft; possesses unique design concept, provides new problem-solving methods, directs the trend of product development and better people's mode of living and production.

UTILITY: It is human orientated, possesses rational function and structure, and shows good performance or ergonomics, safety and duration.

ECONOMIC BENEFIT: It meets market demands, owns a good value for the price, helps to increase the enterprise's income and enhances its brand value.

ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLINESS: It considers green, energy saving, recycling as well as application of new energy technologies, including energy saving technology of industry, energy saving technology of transportation, emerging environmental protection industry.

CRAFT: It makes good use of crafts and materials, and its quality meets the related domestic and foreign standards; it is suitable for mass production.

AESTHETICS: It owns special style and harmonious appearance and colour.

All applicants are considered to have accepted the above criteria.
