Created in 1983 on the initiative of the ministers responsible for industry and culture, to contribute to the bringing together of culture, research and industry, and having become entirely private in 1993, the APCI, in collaboration with its members and its partners, develops tools and group actions that provoked the economic, social and cultural aspects of French design in France and abroad.

Impact on design
• The "Observeur du design' annual Prize. Since 1999, it selects every year the most innovative creations of our daily environment, resulting from company and designer partnerships. The "Observeur Stars" are awarded to the most outstanding. The whole selection is presented at the Science and Industry Centre in Paris. Part of it is presented within traveling exhibitions abroad. It is also among the 17 most remarkable worldwide design prizes exhibited in the "World Best Design Exchange" event in Seoul.
• The Panorama Design France guidebook. Bilingual, the guidebook gives a comprehensive view of the design offered in France. It is extended to Europe for the coming edition scheduled for November 2006.
