Salt & Pepper Shakers
Why is it that the salt and pepper are the only two condiments found on a restaurant table? Sugar is always in a large tall glass container, but for salt and pepper, they are two inseparable companions at the dinner table.

History dictates that the salt shaker was originally ornately designed in gold and silver, and it was until the 17th century thanks to King Louis XIV that it was paired with pepper. The king proclaimed that pepper was superior to any other spice coming from the Middle East. It became the only spice sprinked onto the royal court's cuisine. As a result, salt and pepper eventually made their bond as the ever lasting two pairs.

The holes on the salt and pepper shakers are also quite different. During the times where spices were rare in the western world, the salt shaker had multiple holes to let it flow freely. But the pepper shaker, because it was a spice, only had one single hole to as to not waste it and it was to be used sparingly.
Today, pepper is in abundance and the salt and pepper shakers still remain design favourites. Here are some fun examples of the classic seasonings.
