Three apples that changed the world: the one Eve ate, the one that fell on Newton's head and the one Steve Jobs created*
The obituary published by Time Magazine stated, "Steve Jobs […] wasn't a computer scientist, He had no training as a hardware engineer or an industrial designer.” Despite his lack of formal education in any of the above-mentioned fields, Mr. Jobs was able to change all three disciplines and many of our personal habits. He changed the way we communicate with the world.
Jonathan "Jony" Ive, Senior Vice President of Industrial Design at Apple Inc. is said to be the only one who understood Jobs's vision for the iconic products. His design vision is what will continue to drive buyers towards apple's four pillar products: the iPhone, iPod, iPad and mac computers. "We're constantly working to refine and improve, to simplify, to make something thinner and lighter," he says in the promotional video for the ipad 2, "and yet at the same time increasing its functionality".
The understated elegance and emphasis on function makes apple's products classic examples of brilliant industrial design.
Here, at the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) the staff uses MacBooks, and many use the iPhone as their mobile of choice. In a Reuters article online, Executive Board Member and Icsid Treasurer, Brandon Gien, stated: "Many credit Apple as probably the best advertisement for professional design and the role of design that we have ever seen."
The loss of Steve Jobs's creativity and eye for design was mourned not only be apple and PC fans, but those who listened to music on an iPod, those who admired his leadership and genius. Apple fans everywhere have already begun the proceedings to make October 14 a memorial day: Steve Jobs Day. They are encouraging contribution from the public through their site stevejobsday2011.com.
