FLEXIBLE SEATING FOR FLEXIBLE HOSTS

If you are ever worried about having enough couch space for your guests, here is a design that can help you stretch your seating resources to the max, without eating up environmental resources.

Using recycled, low-cost materials and pre-existing production processes to minimise environmental impact, FlexibleLove, by Chishen Chiu, is experimental cardboard furniture that moves and bends like an accordion. Although made from only paper and wood products, these love-seats are durable enough to hold up to sixteen individuals. The honeycomb structure is what makes these designs so flexible, "changing length and shape with a simple pull at each end."

Based in Miao Li, Taiwan, Chishen's designs demonstrate the great influence of his urban surroundings, consisting mostly of "..small, family-owned factories that produce everything from paper tubes used for rolls of tape to metal parts that find their way into computers and electronic devices."

When he discovered a factory in suburban Taipei that was using the honeycomb structure, Chishen began to experiment. Now this extendible love-seat has been a highlight both on Youtube and at the "2006 Young Designer's Exhibition" in Taiwan.
