BIG BENCH
ABOUT THE DESIGN
“The 6 metre long Big Bench is a slim and elegant bench which would be difficult to produce in other materials. The seat has a varnish of white insoluble colorant, but it could equally be lacquered in different colours, or even produced as a plain, translucent plank. The basis of the bench is a pultruded, glassfibre reinforced polyester profile. It is a standard Fiberline profile which is modified by cutting off the outermost ribs and refining the edges and ends. The plank is then set up along a longitudinal bow using transverse ties in flat steel. The round shape strengthens the profile and increases the carrying capacity considerably, making a 6 metre long bench with only two supports possible. The base frame is made of stainless steel bars measuring 10 mm in diameter.”
Speaking about the Big Bench, jury member Jure Miklavc said: “I especially like the fact that the designers worked with a standard profile, whereby they eliminated the need to make new moulds. By the simple intervention of bending the profile along its length, they were able to make the prefabricated plank into a much stronger beam. Their solution shows clever constructural thinking.
“There is also the aesthetic and ergonomic aspect; the curvature makes for more pleasant seating. The bench has a very light and elegant appearance, almost as if it is floating. Its understated design could fit easily into any environment, both indoors and outdoors.”
Dimensions: length 6 m, height 40 cm, width 50 cm
Weight: 60 kg
Materials: GRP (glassfibre reinforced polyester), inox steel
Techniques: pultrusion
Award: International Composites Design Competition 2006-2007 Winner in the Product Category
