Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen
As a leading European institution in the field of design promotion, the Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen has acted as an intermediary between industry, business and designers since 1954, organising high prestige competitions as the red dot design award which offer design oriented companies the opportunity of comparing performance and quality on an international level.

The design award is an important qualification instrument, which constantly gained in attractiveness. Nowadays, the competition has more than 7,000 entries from 60 countries in an award year and the red dot design award is a seismograph for international design quality. This has made the red dot award one of the largest design competitions worldwide and has established the red dot design award as one of the most sought-after quality labels for good design.

The Design Zentrum Nordhein Westfalen and its red dot design museum are housed in one of the most impressive industrial buildings of the 20th century, the Boiler House of the former Zollverein XII colliery in Essen, which was remodeled for the purpose by the British architect Lord Norman Foster. Since 2002, Zollverein is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

The red dot design museum displays the world's largest and surely also the most unusual exhibition of contemporary design. Over 4,000 square metres of floorspace provide a showcase for around 1,000 products from across the globe - all of them winners of the red dot. The names of the designers and manufacturers read like a who's who of design. And all that in the breathtaking architecture of the former Zollverein colliery.
