CARLETON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF INDUSTRIAL DESIGN 29TH ANNUAL GRADUATION EXHIBITION
Innovative, Inventive and Iconic Design
New and better equipment for Ontario’s fire fighters are just some of the intriguing project prototypes that will be on display at the 29th Annual Graduation exhibition held by Carleton University’s School of Industrial Design at the Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG).The Exhibition is open to the public from 12 noon. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday April 21-22, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday and Tuesday April 23-24.
“This year’s exhibition is the culmination of a year’s work by a uniquely talented group of students who have created designs that could make a difference in peoples’ lives,” says Lois Frankel, Director of the School of Industrial Design. “The exhibition also affords an opportunity to talk with the students themselves about the design process.”
This year's exhibition features more than 40 major projects designed by the largest graduating classes of the School of Industrial Design. Some of the featured design projects are:
- Interactive skating costume that incorporates heat, light, and sound for Winterlude;
- Alpine helmet for the visually impaired skier along with other innovative designs for the Canadian Paralympians;
- Airplane observation area that allows children to view airplanes while waiting for their flight;
- Outdoor art gallery that allows community artists an opportunity to display their art along with other designs to enrich and engage the use of outdoor urban space to promote the awareness and appreciation of the arts;
- An adaptable bathroom for a hospital patient;
- An interactive terrestrial aid to help astronauts safely navigate the lunar surface ; and
- Redesigned forest fire fighting equipment including an integrated communications helmet, water pump pack, and personalized pack system to improve ease of use, safety, and efficiency.

Industry Event – Monday April 23, 4-6pm, sponsored by Veritas Tools, Inc and DW Product Development Inc., welcomes design professionals and business leaders to the show. The guest speaker for this event will be Richard St. John of TED Talk fame, author of Stupid, Ugly, Unlucky and RICH.

Carleton University’s renowned School of Industrial Design is an innovative trend-setter in the field of industrial design in Canada and the oldest undergraduate program of its kind in Ontario. Award winning projects will also be showcased at the event, including five finalists in the Microsoft ‘Next-Gen PC’ Design Competition and Design drawings from Jenna Stephens-Wells, who was a second-place winner at the 2007 Chicago International Home & Housewares Show Student Design Competition.
