MAYOR OF BARCELONA OPENS THE ART CENTER GLOBAL DIALOGUES

Disruptive Thinking Highlighting Impact of Art and Design on Business Innovation

Pasadena (United States) and Barcelona (Spain) - Barcelona's Mayor, Mr. Jordi Hereu, will open The Art Center Global Dialogues on March 7th with a welcome address highlighting the impact of art and design on business innovation as demonstrated through the unique educational partnership between Art Center College of Design and ESADE Business School.

A diverse group of renowned radical thinkers, provocateurs and public opinion leaders has been assembled to discuss issues of critical importance to society at the inaugural Art Center Global Dialogues: Disruptive Thinking, presented by Art Center College of Design, one of the world's premier art and design schools, in partnership with Barcelona-based ESADE, one of the world's leading international business schools.

Distinguished international journalist Richard Addis, the event's Guest Program Director and Moderator, will be joined by a wide range of creative thinkers and opinion leaders - including artists, designers, scientists, activists, executives, architects and entrepreneurs - whose work in their respective fields has had a discernible effect on urban life and other global issues through changes in policies and paradigms.  
 
The event, to be held in Barcelona on Friday, March 7th, will be an intensive day of live, unscripted and interactive discussion on six distinct, yet interrelated topics of global relevance: climate change, geopolitics, business, science, belief and design.

New speakers also added for global event to be held on Friday, March 7, 2008 in Barcelona in partnership with ESADE Business School

The new speakers are:
  • Alfons Sauquet, newly-appointed Dean, ESADE Business School, will be featured in a one-on-one conversation with Lynda Sale (Partner, Sale Owen, marketing consultant, and artist) on the topic of Business
  • Charles Pasternak (academic, scientist, and author) and Joann Fletcher (academic and archeologist) have been added to the discussion on Belief
 
Previously announced moderators and speakers on the various topics include:
  • Climate Change: Harry Eyres (columnist, poet, writer, and naturalist), Sara Wheeler (biographer, traveler, and expert on the Artic and Antarctica), and Peter Head (Director of Arup and head of Planning and Integrated Urbanism)
  • Geopolitics: Richard Addis (newspaper editor, designer, and writer), Ron Haviv (award-winning photojournalist and co-founder of VII Photo Agency), and Bernard Tabaire (Ugandan newspaper editor currently on bail for sedition)
  • Science: Robert Matthews (academic, writer, and journalist), David Hughes (astronomer, professor, and researcher), David Orrell (systems biologist and mathematician), and Fotini Markopoulou-Kalamara (theoretical physicist)
  • Belief: Bigna Pfenninger (founding editor, The Drawbridge, a quarterly literary project)
  • Design: Stephen Bayley (author, cultural critic, and founder of the Design Museum), Thom Mayne (Pritzker Prize-winning architect, currently building the tallest building in Europe), Blaise Agüera y Arcas (software designer at Microsoft Live labs), and Chris Lefteri (materials expert and product designer).

Richard Addis and other Dialogues participants have initiated early conversations on a blog developed specifically for the Dialogues.  Those interested in sharing their own perspectives on these critical issues are encouraged to take part in the Dialogues and post their comments on the blog.

About The Art Center Global Dialogues
The Art Center Global Dialogues: Disruptive Thinking is the first in a series of international events to be presented by Art Center College of Design in collaboration with pre-eminent educational institutions in major world cities, as part of its international strategy of engaging in dialogue about the critical issues in society.  The inaugural event will take place in Barcelona, where Art Center has been invited to develop an increased presence in Europe in conjunction with a number of the city's leading educational and civic institutions. Disruptive Thinking is an important first step of a recently announced, wide-ranging partnership with ESADE Business School that will create a new model for combining design thinking with business strategy through advanced education.
