CALIFORNIA COLLEGE OF THE ARTS NAMES MARK BREITENBERG PROVOST

San Francisco (USA) -  Dr. Mark Breitenberg has been appointed provost of California College of the Arts (CCA), it was announced today by President Stephen Beal. Currently dean of Humanities and Design Sciences at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Breitenberg will assume his position on 1 February, 2009. As provost, Breitenberg will be CCA's chief academic officer with broad responsibilities for the strategic planning, development, and administration of the college's academic programs. Four divisions and three major program areas fall under his supervision: the divisions of Architecture, Fine Arts, Design, and Humanities & Sciences; the Libraries; Special Programs, which includes Extended Education and Study Abroad; and the Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts. He succeeds Beal, who served as CCA's provost from 1997 to 2008, and is currently president of CCA.

"I am delighted that Mark will be joining CCA as provost," commented Beal. "He is a passionate and committed advocate of arts education and possesses an outstanding record of academic leadership. Through his work at Art Center, he has made significant contributions to the understanding of contemporary art and design and has been a proponent of strong humanities and sciences programs in arts education. He will play a pivotal role in the coming year as we develop a new five-year strategic plan and complete our WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation process."

"I'm truly excited and honored to be joining CCA's creative community," Breitenberg said. "I've always admired the college's unique blend of traditional and innovative practices in art and design education, as well as its commitment to the importance of diversity, visual literacy and community outreach. It's already one of the top art and design schools in the U.S., and has the potential and promise of even greater success in the future."

"CCA is also very supportive of my upcoming role as President of Icsid. They have very strong programs in design, including an innovative new MBA degree in Design Strategy headed by Nathan Shedroff. Yves Behar chairs the Industrial Design department, and Brenda Laurel has recently created a new, interdisciplinary MFA program in design. So it's a very forward-looking school in terms of design with some truly talented practicing designers. I'm also excited about working in such a creative part of the country: San Francisco and Silicon Valley have some of the most innovative companies and design firms in the world."
