BARCELONA DESIGN CENTRE AND SPANISH MINISTRY OF SCIENCE AND INNOVATION ANNOUNCE 2008 NATIONAL DESIGN PRIZES
Cordoba (Spain) - On 5 May, the Palacio de Congresos of Cordoba was the stage of the delivery of the 2008 National Design Prizes, organised by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and BCD, Barcelona Design Centre, an Icisd Promotional Member. The award, which in its eighteenth edition, has this year rewarded the work of SUMMA in the professional category, and STUA, in the business category.
The ceremony was chaired by the Princes of Asturias, accompanied by the President of the regional government of Andalucia, José Antonio Griñán; the Ministrry of Science And Innnovation, Cristina Garmendia; el Mayor of Córdoba, Rafael Blanco; the President of BCD, Miquel Valls, as well as professionals from the business and the design field, and this year's winners.
At these 18th prizes, the Jury, formed by Melchor Andreu, Pati Núñez, Juan Manuel Ubiergo, Marcel Benedito, Ricardo González Gil, Robin Edman, Elisa Sáinz and Isabel Roig, decided to award the following:
National Design Prize to SUMMA, "for being one of the first multi-disciplinary design companies in Spain and for its significant ability to take on projects of great complexity and produce excellent conceptual and formal results."
National Design Prize to STUA, "a company that creates sober, refined and essential products at the service of users. Their attention to their product details, communications and presentations reflects the spirit of the organisation and their passion for everything they believe in."
The Prince of Asturias captured the attention of the attendants with his speech in which he underlined that, "in times of crisis we need to encourage the high value that implies design for businesses".
The National Design Prizes, honorary in nature, are the highest distinctions given in Spain to designers in recognition of their outstanding professional work and to companies that use design successfully in their strategies for innovation.
