Beijing (China) - On 27 November 2009, the China Red Star Design Award, endorsed by Icsid, held a magnificent award ceremony in the China Central Television (CCTV) building in Beijing. The live ceremony was broadcast widely online and reported by more than 60 media.

In 2009, Red Star received 3821 products from 758 applicants, increasing 21% and 34% respectively since last year and its coverage extending nearly 74% within China. Ten experts from the United Kingdom, United States, Japan, Korea, China Taiwan and mainland China were invited to be part of the international jury.

Through a strict screening process, a total of 191 products from 102 applicants were awarded, of which there was one Best of Gold prize, 8 Gold prizes, 10 Best Originality prizes, 172 Excellent prizes, one Best Team prize and one Best New Designer prize. In addition, China Red Star Design Award Committee presented the Special Prize for the 60th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China to award the excellently designed floats.

Related activities

In the three months prior to the event, Red Star held numerous travelling exhibitions showcasing award-winning products from previous years. Awarded products were exhibited in Nanjing, Tianjin, Chengdu, Wuhan, Guangzhou, Xi'an, Hangzhou, Shenzhen, Shanghai and Beijing.

On 30 November, the "Red Star enters Shunyi District" event was held at the establishment of the Shunyi Industrial Design Center. At present, five design-oriented enterprise groups of aviation, automobile, engineering, new building material and city industry have been formed in Shunyi District. This indicates that China Red Star Design Award plays an important role in promoting development of regional design industry.

The first Red Star awarded product shop was also opened in Beijing this past month.

Chinese design on the world stage

Invited by Korea Institute of Design Promotion (KIDP), Mr. Chen Dongliang, Director of Beijing Industrial Design Center (BIDC), visited Korea to be a juror for the Good Design 2009 competition and to cut the ribbon for the opening ceremony of Design Korea 2009.

Held biennially, Design Korea started from the Seoul World Best Design Exchange 2003. This year's exhibition was held in Inchon International Exhibition Center with the aim to exhibit the selected excellent design works and to become a world-class design event.

China Red Star Design Award was the only representative of China's design awards invited to attend Design Korea 2009. Red Star exhibited 15 awarded products, together with 21 famous awards from 19 countries such as Reddot, iF and IDEA in the World Best Design Exchange.

As a representative of China's excellent design, Red Star has won the acknowledgement from the international design circle. The increasing influence of Red Star in the world provides an excellent opportunity for China's design to compete on the world stage and thus promote the internationalisation of China's design.
