Youth designing change

Montreal (Canada) – In celebration of the third annual World Industrial Design Day (WIDD) on 29 June, the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (Icsid) have announced a new element to their global student poster competition, public online voting. For the second year running, the WIDD student poster competition has design students from over 60 educational institutions on six separate continents vying to win top honours in representing this years theme: "Industrial design: Humane solutions for a resilient world".

Seen as the spirit of the competition, this year's theme is apt to provoke an inspiring reaction from students worldwide. Icsid President Mark Breitenberg stated, "This theme stems from the immense response received from our recent 'Uniting Designers in Disaster' initiative launched on Facebook on 22 January in light of the disaster in Haiti and conveys the important role industrial design can play in global issues."

Beginning 1 March, students will submit their posters to a distinguished panel of design professionals and field experts – representatives from the Icsid Executive Board – who will select the shortlist of five posters.  These finalists will then be voted on by the public via the Icsid website to declare an overall winner. The online voting will begin 11 May until 27 May and is open for the public to vote on their favourite poster.
