The Strategic Partnership between Design and Sustainable Development
October 2003
Cape Town, South Africa

Theme

The  theme for the Regional Meeting in South Africa was Strategic Partnership between Design and Sustainable Development.

Objectives

Objectives of this first Africa regional meeting of Icsid were:
  • to highlight the role designers can play in the sustainable development of Africa
  • to construct concrete proposals for projects to advance design consciousness and interaction in Africa
  • to strengthen the Network of Africa Designers voice and presence
The programme focused on Africa Developmental issues. The first day was devoted to Design Professional and Promotional matters with an overview of the current South African System of Innovation and a quick peek into future plans. The second day was devoted to Design Education matters and the keynote address focussed on the continent of Africa. A brief but comprehensive overview of NEPAD - The New Partnership for Africa's Development - was delivered.

The Icsid Board members and delegates were then asked according to their areas of expertise to contribute in strategic discussions sessions on matters of concern to the African continent's development. They were also asked to assist in the formulation of possible projects to address developmental issues.
