Call for design book chapters

A new design text book is currently in production consisting of 30 chapters. The editors would welcome proposals for the few remaining chapters. An outline of the collection is provided below, together with an outline specification of the content being sought. Also below is guidance on author profile, deadlines and submission requirements.

The collection

The book is provisionally titled 'Design and Designing: A Critical Introduction'.
It is being edited by Steve Garner (The Open University) and Chris Evans (Aston University) UK. It will be published by Berg in 2012.

The book is designed to support theoretical studies and studio-based design teaching at introductory level in universities, for example in courses on design studies, product design, graphic design. A feature of the book is the presentation of a coherent design process through 30 different 'voices' from a range of design disciplines. It will be a large format, well illustrated book of some 400 pages.

The book seeks to develop readers' knowledge of the design and designing of others and to this end they will be exposed to a wide variety of examples of design practice. This is enhanced by hands-on activities which develop basic skills and abilities for designing and which are self-assessed through a number of guided design projects.

Requirements

All chapters are 5000 words long. Authors may include up 10 illustrations. Note the following priorities:

1. The collection has a bias towards product design and graphic design since these recruit significant numbers of students. However, the editors would welcome proposals from authors with design expertise in other design or design-related fields such as fashion design, interaction design, architecture, furniture, the crafts etc.

2. The collection seeks to reflect the whole process of design. The conceptual stage is well subscribed but there are opportunities for chapters that discuss a later stage of the design process such as embodiment, detail design, user studies, evaluation, marketing etc.

In this way chapters will contribute to an illumination of a generic design process whilst providing detail from a specific design field.

Qualifications

You should be experienced in design through professional practice and/or education. You will need to be familiar with design practice today and have expertise in design process in your chosen field. You should have clear opinions on what today's design students need to know in order to secure a job and achieve rapid promotion in the design professions of tomorrow.  You will need to have the ability to write in a clear and direct style relevant to junior undergraduate students and be able to illustrate your chapter with striking examples of professional practice.

Deadlines

Your 5000 word copy plus your proposed illustrations will be needed by 31 October 2010. You will receive an edited draft for approval before going to print. Please do not submit copy unless you have received a formal invitation from the authors based on an accepted chapter outline.
